New Mills Trout Fishing Lake is a stream-fed water home to hard-fighting specimens of rainbow, tiger, blue and brown trout up to 12lb. The lake is open all year round, with wheelchair friendly platforms available. Fly Lake is currently open 8am to 5pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Seasonal hours may vary.

Fly Lake FAQ’s

  • The lake is currently open 8am to 5pm Tuesday to Sunday. If we ever need to close, for example for weather reasons, we’ll always update this on Facebook and Google.

  • Yes, we have a small number of rods available to hire from the tackle shop, between shop hours 9am-5pm. Hire cost is £15, and comes with a small selection of flies, forceps, and leader.

  • Yes. We sell a variety of terminal tackle, flies, plus a selection of fly rods, spinning rods, reels, fishing clothing and accessories. We stock brands such as Snowbee, Greys, Wychwood, Fulling Mill.

  • Yes, we accept both cash and card payment in the tackle shop. If the door is locked, there is a self service QR code to scan, which’ll all allow you to purchase a digital ticket.

Fly fishing lessons are available to book in advance with our Angling Trust Level 2 (Advanced) coach, Stuart Ingledew. First Aid/DBS Verified.

Fly Lake Rules

These rules are in place to safeguard our fish stocks and to ensure that you have an enjoyable visit. Please read these rules carefully before fishing. Any failure to observe them or by acting in any way, which interferes with others enjoyment or use of the lake or to the detriment of fish stocks, will result in the offender being asked to leave and banned. Fishery management reserves the right to carry out tackle inspections at random.

  • It is the anglers responsibility to ensure they are fishing legally. Anyone over the age of 13 needs a rod license to fish at New Mills. Licenses for children aged between 13 and 16 are free, but you’ll still need to register for a junior license online before fishing. Children under 13 do not need a license. Licenses can be purchased from https://www.gov.uk/fishing-licences from the Environment Agency. 

  • Any hire equipment lost or broken will be charged for.

  • Children under the age of 16 years must be accompanied by an adult at all times. 

  • The fishery provides pre-treated nets free of charge for use. All own nets to be dipped prior to fishing.

  • Fish should be unhooked in the net in the water, and released with minimal handling, ensuring sufficient recovery time if necessary.

  • A maximum of two droppers on the fly.

  • No Flicker or Booby flies permitted.

  • The use of small bite indicators is permitted.

  • Barbless or de-barbed hooks ONLYbarbed hooks are not permitted.

  • Catch & Keep tickets – fish must be humanely killed.

  • Trout damaged on the fly lake due to careless behaviour will be charged for at the going rate per lb.

  • Anyone caught under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be asked to leave the site with no ticket refund.

  • Please bin all litter, cigarette butts and discarded line (line bin is located outside the tackle shop).

  • Well-behaved dogs on a lead and under control are welcome onsite. 

  • Catch reports and photos of notable fish would be appreciated for our website.

  • The Fishery will accept no responsibility for any damage to vehicles or loss from vehicles however caused.

  • The Fishery will accept no responsibility for any damage or loss to any personal belongings.
